Alicante is located on the East coast of Spain by the Mediterranean Sea. It is the main city on the ´Costa Blanca’. Despite being a large city with nearly 400,000 inhabitants it is also an excellent holiday destination with many superb beaches including El Postiguet near the port and La Playa de la San Juan which is almost 5 km long. The old town centre of El Barrio is lively with tourists in the evenings, for a more trendy nightclub scene you should head down to the Alfonso el Sabio Area. As you would expect from a large city, eating and shopping is varied to tastes and budgets although the tapas bars of Alicante have a rare Valentian taste which you will only find in the city. Sightseers should take a day or two out to examine the cities rich history and culture. Places not to be missed are Alicante Provincial Archaeological Museum which is a modern museum housed in an old hospital. Santa Barbara Castle which overlooks the city from Benacantil Hill, One of the largest medieval forts in Europe built by the Moors in the 10ª siglo. San Nicolás de Bari Pro-cathedral a small 17ª church that has an interior considered a Baroque masterpiece. Finally Santa María Church. The oldest church dates back to the 13ª century but is actually built on the remains of the original Mosque of the moors. Originally Gothic Style it has had a rococo refit in the 16ª siglo. After getting drunk on Culture head up to El barrio to unwind.
