Altea is a pretty and cobbled rustic old town. As a base it is a good compromise for those who want a quiet relaxing break, while being close enough to nip into Benidorm for a bit of madness. The area is surrounded by the Sierra bernia mountains which keeps weather cool during the summer months. The old town is up in the hills with the newer town down on the seafront. The views from the mountains above the old town are spectacular and the old town itself has retained its charm. The beaches stretch for about five kilometres up to Benidorm and although they hold a blue flag they tend to be pebbly so pack your flip flops. Altea has markets and mini markets and a reasonable selection of restaurants. The narrow cobbled streets of the old town provide an array of good arts /craft and local produce shops. Nightlife however is very low key. The message in Altea is unwind and relax but Benidorm is only a short hop away in a taxi.
